The Internship Agreement is a contract that outlines the relationship between an intern and the employer. An intern is a person who is either a student or a fresh graduate hired for a specified period to work under the supervision of the employer or supervisor. The internship is the period of supervised work provided by an intern. Note that an internship may be paid or unpaid. In an unpaid internship, the intern does not receive any payment as compensation for any work they provide. For paid internships, an intern will receive monetary payment for their work.

Note that the Internship Agreement is different from an Employment Agreement. This is because an intern is not an employee, as the intern is only a temporary worker in training who is hired to be trained and provide some supervised services to the employer.

After the internship period, the intern may return to school, or the employer may retain the intern as an employee of the organization. Similarly, unlike an employee, an intern is not entitled to employment benefits such as bonuses, annual leave, maternity leave, pension, and retirement benefits

How to use this document

The document can be used by an employer seeking to hire an intern and seeking a well-drafted legal document to regulate their relationship. This is a simple document that requires vital information such as the names and addresses of the employer and the intern, the duration of the internship, compensation and other benefits (if available), and obligations of the intern. It also includes confidentiality obligations, intellectual property ownership, and termination.

After completing the document, it should be printed, and the employer and the intern should sign the printed form. Alternatively, the intern and employer can sign the document electronically and exchange it via email. The employer's and the intern's signatures should be witnessed by a separate individual who will fill out the section required for attestation, include their name, address, and signature, and append their signature.

After this, the two parties should keep at least one signed copy of the document for their record.

Applicable law

The Labour Act regulates employment relationships in Nigeria. Also, the general rules of contract apply to this document.
