A Student Employment Agreement is a policy document provided by a college or university when a student would like to start working in the internal employment program at that school. An internal employment program can be any work program set up only for students. For example, the student may have federal or international work-study eligibility, or perhaps the school wants to hire students that are specifically skilled for certain roles. This document should be used only for student employment and not for other types of employment relationships.

These documents are generally very simple. The main reason for the simplicity is because Student Employment Agreements are generally part of a package of documents the student will receive, including, often, a student employee handbook, confidentiality agreement, and others.

Student Employment Agreements are not negotiated documents - in other words, the student has no say in what is contained within them. Instead, the school has a template or standard form it uses for all students entering the student employment program.

Please be advised that if the student is under the age of 18, prior authorization will be needed from the student's parent or guardian.

How to use this document

This document is quite short and simple. It will request the basic details about the student employment program, including eligibility, pay information, and general rules. It also asks whether there is another document, such as a handbook, that students will be subject to.

Information about the specific salary or hourly rate the student will receive, as well as the exact duration of the employment, is not included in these types of documents. That will be determined by the specific department the student works for and may be in that department's specific paperwork.

Once filled out, this document should be signed by the student. A copy should be kept with the student and a copy in their file.

Applicable law

Although there are no specific laws governing what goes into a Student Employment Agreement, these types of positions are generally overseen by both the school itself and the Department of Labor.
