A Rent Receipt is a way to document rent payments that a Tenant makes to a Landlord. A Rent Receipt can be helpful for both Tenants, offering documentation that they timely submitted payments to the Landlord, and Landlords, giving them a way to track incoming payments and monitor late payments or bounced checks. For Tenants who pay their rent in cash, a rent receipt is often the only written proof they have showing that they paid rent at all. Often, both Landlords and Tenants choose to save copies of rent receipts for these reasons. This can be used for both a Residential Lease Agreement arrangent, where someone is renting a property in which to reside, or a Commercial Lease Agreement arrangement where someone is renting a property in which to conduct business.

This document is used by a Landlord to notify a Tenant that their rent payment was recieved and to create a record of that payment in case of future dispute. In many states, receiving a rent receipt is one of the rights a renter has in the landlord/tenant relationship. For more information on renter's rights, please see the guide Know your Rights: Tenant's Rights in Residential Properties. For situations where a renter has not paid rent, a Late Rent Notice should be used instead.

How to use this document

This Rent Receipt includes important information, including the amount of the rent payment, the date the payment was received, and the manner in which the payment was made (e.g. cash, check, money order, etc.). This Receipt also allows the Landlord to detail if the payment was a full or partial payment. If the Tenant made a partial rent payment, the Landlord can describe any late charges that the Tenant must then pay due to their failure to pay their entire rent payment by the date it was due.

Once the Rent Receipt has been filled out, the Landlord can send an original signed copy of the receipt to the Tenant and save a copy of the letter for their own records.

Applicable law

Many states require Landlords to provide rent receipts to their Tenants free of charge when asked. This rule also applies to former Tenants who request rent receipts within one year of moving out of a rental property. To find out if a rent receipt is required by law, a Landlord or Tenant can check with their state housing bureau or tenants' union.
