Employee's Request for Remote Working Arrangement Covid-19/Coronavirus

A Request for Remote Working Arrangement is a letter sent by an employee to their employer, requesting to work from home. A remote work arrangement allows the employee to work outside the office or designated work location. In this way, the employee can work from home or any other suitable environment other than the office or work location, usually for a specified period.

Sometimes, due to certain circumstances, such as if the employer is the primary caregiver of their sick child or parent or due to a global pandemic like the Coronavirus (otherwise known as Covid-19), an employee who works at a physical work location, may request to work from home. To achieve this, the employee should first send this letter to their employers, stating the precise reason for their request and assuring the employer that the remote work will not affect their productivity.

How to use this document

This letter should be completed by entering the full name and address of the employer and employee, a clear reason for the request, nature of current employment (such as part-time or full-time employment), and the new working arrangement (such as hours of work and other schedules of the remote work).

After completing the document, the employee making this request should sign the document and send it to the employer. If the employer is an organization (such as a company, firm, business, or other organization), the letter should be sent to an officer of that organization, for example, the human resources manager. Alternatively, this letter may be sent by email.

After sending the letter, the employee should wait for their employer's response. An employer has the right to either grant or refuse such a request, particularly if remote work is not stated in the Employment Agreement, the Employee Handbook, Offer Letter, or other policy documents of the employer. If this request is denied, the employee may either continue working for the employer or send in their Resignation Letter.

Applicable law

The Nigerian Labour Act, 2004 regulates employer and employee relationships. The rules of general contract also apply to this document.
