The Vehicle Sale Receipt is a document that shows proof of purchase of a vehicle. It shows that the buyer has paid for a vehicle and that ownership of the vehicle has been transferred to the buyer. This document allows both the buyer and seller to acknowledge the payment and exchange of the vehicle.

This document is intended for roadworthy cars deemed safe for use on public roads.

The receipt explicitly states that the vehicle is sold "as seen," indicating that it has undergone a visual inspection and is being sold in the condition observed and accepted by the buyer. However, it's important to add that this does not release the seller from the responsibility of ensuring the vehicle matches the description in any advertisements or representations made to the buyer.

It is crucial to emphasize that selling a vehicle "as seen" is inappropriate if the vehicle may not be roadworthy or safe to drive or if the buyer has not inspected the vehicle.

After buying a vehicle, a purchase receipt is the relevant document to have and a Bill of Sale for proper documentation.

The document describes the vehicle, such as the model of the vehicle, the make, the year, and the mileage of the vehicle. It also outlines the purchase price, and payment method, and states whether there are outstanding fees.

How to use this document

This document should be used after the sale of a vehicle. The seller of the vehicle is required to complete this document by providing the required information. After completing it, two copies of this document should be printed and signed. Both the seller and buyer should read this document before signing.

Whether the buyer is buying a new or used vehicle, after signing, both the buyer and the seller need to go to the local office of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to initiate the transfer of vehicle ownership. This step will ensure that the buyer becomes the new registered owner of the vehicle.

Note that the FRSC is responsible for vehicle registration and licensing in Nigeria. Advice on the procedure for vehicle registration can be found on the FRSC website.

Applicable law

Vehicle registration in Nigeria is typically governed by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act and the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR). The general rules of contract also apply to this document.
