A Request to Alter Contract, also sometimes called a Letter Request to Alter Contract, is a short document that allows for one party to a contract to request a change or amendment from the other party. A Request to Alter Contract isn't the actual alteration document for the contract - in other words, it's not the piece of paper that will actually change the underlying agreement - it's just the first step for a party to open negotiations about when an existing contract needs to be changed or an addition needs to be made.

This form letter is very simple, as the actual document to change a contract will come later. For the process of changing a contract, first, the party sends this letter requesting a change. In it, the basics of the requested change are entered, as well as a reference to the portion of the original contract that is being amended. Then, if the other party agrees, they will respond back in writing with their agreement. Finally, the parties will draw up an actual amendment document to the contract, sign it, and incorporate it in the original contract as an addendum.

How to use this document

This document can be used in any situation where a party to a contract would like to request an alteration of the contract from the other individual who signed it.

In this document, the parties names and contact information (like address and email address) will be entered. Then, basic details of the contract will be entered, such as the date it was signed and its subject matter. Finally, the specifics of the requested alteration will be entered.

The letter should then be printed, signed, and sent.

Applicable law

Contracts in the United States can be subject to both Federal laws and specific state laws, depending on the contents and subject matter of the contract. State laws govern general contract principles like formation and mutual understanding. Federal laws may restrict what services can be contracted for (for example, you may not contract for anything illegal) and certain broad categories, like contracting for something that looks more like an employment relationship.

Most often, individual state laws may govern the interpretation of the contract in case of a dispute and therefore individual laws are more likely at play for contract alterations. There are no specific laws, however, which govern what needs to go in a request for an alteration of contract.
