An Employee Code of Conduct Policy is a set of rules that outlines professional and ethical conduct employees are expected to maintain at the workplace. It contains information about how employees are expected to conduct themselves while relating to their co-workers, client, visitors, and the organization's management. It also sets various disciplinary measures for violation of the code of conduct.

This document is one of the most important rule books an organization must have as it outlines an organization's core values, ethics, and culture, and failure of an employee to follow this policy will have negative consequences.

Common examples of unacceptable conduct include, but are not limited to: fraudulent practices, sexual harassment, harassment, discrimination in the workplace, frequent lateness or absenteeism at work, lack of professionalism, and willful refusal to comply with company rules. Some punitive measures may include loss of employment benefits, reduction of salary, suspension, and outright dismissal. For example, an employee who is guilty of sexual harassment may be terminated.

How to use this document

This document can be used as a single document or incorporated into the Employee Handbook. The person filling this document will provide all the necessary information relating to the employer and the employer's policies.

Note that this document is different from the Employment Contract because the employment contract only relates to the individual employee as no two employees will have the same contract. On the other hand, this document and other policy documents of an organization provide rules and the organization's expectations that apply to all employees.

After completing the document, the document should be printed in several copies and given to employees of the organization. Employees should sign an acknowledgment copy stating that they have read and understood the policy, and they agree to be bound by its provisions.

Other employee policy books available for download are the Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy, Remote Work Policy, and the Employee Privacy Policy.

Applicable law

The Nigerian Labour Act 2004 is the primary legislation that regulates employment matters in Nigeria. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) prohibits the discrimination of persons in Nigeria.
